december 22!!!

looking forward to that date. why? cos that's the day when "the lion, the witch and the wardrobe" opens. for those who don't know, it is the movie adaptation of C.S. Lewis's book, one of the novels in the Chronicles of Narnia series.

quick synopsis of the text. 4 children go to live with a professor in the english countryside. in his house, they discover a wardrobe that is the 'doorway' to a fantastic country, Narnia. Narnia is a country inhabited by fantasy creatures like fauns, dwarves, talking animals. but this country is ruled by a wicked White Witch. the White Witch covered the land in an everlasting winter. these 4 children are the 'chosen ones' who are to deliver Narnia from her tyranny. but along the way, one of them gets 'corrupted' by the White Witch. Aslan the Lion comes into the picture. the White Witch declares that in order to 'fulfil destiny', because of the corrupted one, there has to be a blood sacrifice. Aslan offers himself in sacrifice, in exchange for the boy. the White Witch kills Aslan. but Aslan pulls of a 'Jesus christ' thing by rising from the dead, and becoming more powerful as a result. together, Aslan and the 4 children help to overthrow the White Witch. the 4 children thus begin a reign of peace in Narnia. after many many years of golden rule, the children (now adults) rediscover the 'doorway' back to the 'real' world. they reemerge from the wardrobe exactly as when they entered, as if nothing had ever happened, and return to their lives, but carrying the secret of Narnia with them. btw, it is realised in the course of the book that the professor actually knows about Narnia and was present at its 'creation'. but he doesn't tell them that. the reader has to infer for themselves.

now, i got really excited when i saw the newspaper article. i thought they were going to make the entire series. but what dampened my excitement was the realisation that "lion, witch and wardrobe" is actually the 2nd book in the series. of course, it is one of the most exciting. i could not put it down. but i was a little disappointed that they may not be doing the entire series. pity. but maybe this movie will inspire people to want to read the entire series for themselves. that would be great. :D
